A 24-year-old man who allegedly held a woman hostage in Nightcliff is in custody, NT Police said, following a stand-off overnight.

The “serious incident” kicked off shortly after 8pm, when police were notified that the armed man had threatened the woman and was holding her against her will at a Nightcliff residence.

Police said the man was an “arrest target” and was subject to a parole revocation order at the time of the incident.

They also said the man was known to the woman.

The Territory Response Group, along with the Police Negotiator Unit, were dispatched to the scene where negotiations started and the area was cordoned off.

Police said the woman was eventually released unharmed and the man subsequently surrendered before being arrested and safely taken into custody.

Police did not say in a statement how long the stand-off lasted.

“Investigations are ongoing and charges are yet to be laid,” police media manager Rob Cross said in the statement.
