Woman charged for helping Darwin arrivals falsify travel records to avoid COVID restrictions

A woman who processed interstate travellers at the airport has been arrested for allegedly offering advice on how to falsify travel records and for providing classified information to a man in an attempt to dodge the NT’s mandatory quarantine rules late last month, NT Police said.

The NT Police’s Special References Unit (SRU) has alleged the 37-year-old woman offered to process a traveler from a declared hotspot to ensure “clear passage” through the Border Arrival Checkpoint at Darwin International Airport.

Assistant Commissioner for Crime, Intelligence and Capability Michael White said the woman’s advice included how travellers could create false records to dodge the need to quarantine.

It was unclear what her specific occupation was.

Investigators also allege that the woman was also involved in the case of a 43-year-old man arrested more than three weeks ago for COVID-border related charges.

Police alleged the woman unlawfully released “confidential information” to the man from a declared COVID hot spot to assist him from being apprehended after breaching the government’s mandatory quarantine rules.

“Further information provided by the woman assisted the man in breaching Northern Territory COVID border control measures,” the SRU said in a statement.

On August 27, the man was arrested for a COVID-border related offence. Police did not provide details of how the connivance between the pair transpired or if they were known to each other.

Police also did not mention if the man was tested for COVID-19.

It was not known if these cases were the only alleged fraudulent transactions the woman has carried out.

Investigators also did not say if there were other public workers involved in this illegal scheme.

“The behaviour of this person is appalling.,” Asst Commissioner White said in a statement.

“For someone in a position who is responsible for ensuring the safety of all Territorians to act in this manner is beyond self-interest and the charges which are likely to be laid will reflect the serious nature of this conduct.”

The woman was charged Monday afternoon with disclosure of confidential information, contrary to s76, of the NT Criminal Code and recklessly endangering life.
