A NT Local Court judge awarded a woman $120,000 in civil damages after finding a police officer slipped a finger into her vagina during an illegal search for drugs and jewellery that was done in front of male police officers, adding if the matter were raised in a criminal court it would likely constitute an assault and battery.
The matter was heard before Judge Ben O’Loughlin in November, and related to the physical search of an unnamed plaintiff who was lawfully arrested on August 22, 2020, after committing various property offences in Stuart Park, where the judge said she was “extremely abusive to the police and was generally resisting”.
