A woman was allegedly stabbed in the head by her partner in a community outside of Alice Springs overnight while in an unrelated incident a man was allegedly stabbed on a street in the town by a man he knew who had pulled up in a car before driving off, NT Police said.

NT Police director of communications Mark Wilton said in a statement a 35-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stabbing his 36-year-old female partner in the head in the community of Amoonguna sometime before 5:30am Thursday.

Amoonguna is about 15km south-east of Alice Springs.

Mr Wilton said the woman was taken to Alice Springs Hospital by St John Ambulance in a stable condition with a wound to her head.

He said the man was arrested at the scene and police expected him to be charged with an unspecified offence or offences later today.

In the other reported stabbing in the town Mr Wilton said that about 1:50am police were told that a 35-year-old man had been assaulted on Barret Drive, Desert Springs.

“The occupants of black Ford SUV allegedly drove up to the man, exited the vehicle and stabbed the man multiple times before fleeing the scene in the vehicle,” Mr Wilton said.

The victim, who is believed to know the alleged offender, was taken to Alice Springs Hospital in a stable condition Mr Wilton said.
