A man allegedly repeatedly punched his partner in the face and then stabbed her while they were riding on a public bus in Palmerston, NT Police said.

Police director of communication Mark Wilton said in a statement that about 3.10pm Tuesday police received reports that a woman had been punched and stabbed by her partner on the bus traveling in Yarrawonga.

“It is alleged that when the victim boarded the bus, her partner followed her and assaulted her multiple times to the face before producing an edged weapon and striking her with it,” Mr Wilton said.

“Transit security officers attended and apprehended the man.”

Mr Wilton said St John Ambulance paramedics took the victim to Royal Darwin Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries while police arrested the 38-year-old alleged offender, who has since been charged with aggravated assault, engaging in conduct that contravenes a domestic violence order and being armed with an offensive weapon.

He has been remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court today.
