Who were the NT Government’s favourite companies for contracts in 2022?

The NT Government awarded a total of 1,886 contracts to companies through public and select tenders for the fiscal year 2022, amounting to $2.18 billion.

The NT Independent, after publishing a list of the biggest winners in government sweeps earlier this week, has now analysed which companies won the most government contracts overall, with engineering services and consultancy firms leading the Top 10, with a favourite lawyer of the Police Commissioner cracking the Top 5.

Topping the list of most contracts, is Darwin-based engineering and construction firm GHD Pty Ltd, which bagged 26 contracts worth $7.5 million for various works including the Kempsey Road Project and several water and engineering developments.

GHD – which provides engineering, architecture, environment and construction services—is the only company the NT Government has awarded over 100 tenders to since 2013.

Darwin construction company Akron Group NT Pty Ltd came second with 15 awarded contracts valued at $33.6 million. Government-awarded tenders included a two-year contract to maintain 3,800 Territory Government homes, among others.

Global infrastructure, environmental and social development company Cardno (NT) Pty Ltd (now Stantec Inc.) followed with 13 awarded contracts totalling $1.6 million.

Cardno (NT) is a member of the Cardno Group, which sold its Americas and Asia Pacific consulting divisions to Stantec Inc recently.

No surprise, one of the Big Four consulting firms made the Top 10, with KPMG receiving 12 consultancy contracts from the NT Government worth $2.2 million for 2022. The multinational company, operating from a local office provides auditing, tax and consulting services.

Other front-runners in winning the most government contracts include Jamie Chalker’s coronial inquest lawyer Ian Freckelton being awarded 12 tenders, valued at a whopping $628,700 for legal services.

WTD Constructions Pty Ltd won 11 contracts, with a total of $21.1 million; Jacobs Group (Australia) Pty Ltd, 11 tenders for a total of $3.5 million; and Aurecon Australasia Pty Ltd, 11 contracts valued at almost $3.8 million.

Professional engineering services company Downer Edi Works Pty Ltd won 10 tenders worth a total of $11.3 million, and WSP Australia Pty Ltd has gotten nine contracts from the government totalling $1.5 million.

For the previous fiscal year, 787 were procured through public bidding which totalled $1,686,008,729, while 1,099 were selected bids amounting to $332,315,672.

  1. Not sure how much the NT receives but over 2 billion spent on tenders. How much did it cost taxpayers to manage the spending?
