A 19-year-old man who allegedly went on a drunken vehicle rampage yesterday morning in Alice Springs, that sent a woman to hospital and damaged six cars, is facing a string of charges while three teens have been charged for break and enters across the community, in what a local politician has called the latest “outrageous crimes” plaguing the town.

Police said the 19-year-old was nearly four times over the legal alcohol limit when he drove a Ford Falcon into a supermarket carpark on Railway Terrace yesterday morning where he smashed into a number of vehicles, pushing one into a woman who was later treated for minor injuries.

The driver then left the carpark and drove through a red light rear-ending another vehicle on the Stuart Highway.

His car later broke down on Palm Circuit where he was arrested by police providing a high range alcohol reading of 0.198 per cent.

Meanwhile, police said this morning that they have also charged three teens, aged between 14 and 16, with multiple property offences related to a spate of break and enters across the town that also involved a car being stolen from a local residence yesterday.

The alleged drunk driver is facing seven charges, including failing to stop after a crash, recklessly endangering serious harm, dangerous driving and driving while unlicensed. He was remanded to face court today.

Alice Springs MLA Robyn Lambley said the latest incidents, including a hit-and-run that killed a man on the Ross Highway earlier this month, were “outrageous” and demanded action be taken to restore law and order in the town.

In a letter, to the Chief Minister, the Police Minister and the Police Commissioner, Ms Lambley pleaded for immediate action to address the “serious deterioration in law and order in Alice Springs”.

Ms Lambley criticised the trio for failing to explain to the public what actions they are taking to keep people safe.

“The people of Alice Springs deserve better,” she wrote.

“I ask you as the leaders of the Northern Territory, when it comes to safety, law and order, to look deeper into the problems in Central Australia.

“The frequency and severity of these incidents is escalating. We need help.”
