The developer behind the proposed 11-storey hotel at the Darwin Convention Centre has announced it will not proceed with the project following strong opposition from Larrakia elders, but the CLP Government has committed to proceeding with a “high-level concept” at the same site anyway.
SH Darwin Hotel, formerly CEL Darwin Hotel, announced on Tuesday afternoon it has scrapped its plans for the 236-room hotel, which follows a heritage application filed with the Federal Government by two Larrakia elders, calling for the development to be blocked because of concerns it would cause “damage and desecration” to a nearby sacred site at Stokes Hill.
Corruption. Disrespect. Disgusting behaviour.
Dodgy politics rule once more.
We can’t trust the incumbent NTG to make economic or cultural changes that reflect the wishes of traditional custodians. They are simply ignored or sidelined in favour of greedy developers who only have the mighty dollar at the forefront of their decision-making. No consideration of culture, tradition or respect.
It has been ever thus. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Territorians are relegated to the scrap heap of irrelevance.
Successive governments have ignored the importance of this nation’s heritage.
Shame, shame, shame…
Hopefully we will get an even bigger hotel on the site.
Also, I spoke with the spirits and they said it was fine to build on that site. Anyone who says the spirits aren’t happy is lying.
