Taminmin College was plunged into a lockdown Thursday morning, after an agitated special needs student became involved in an incident with staff and was later wandering around the school grounds.

Students were locked down in their classrooms at the rural area school for approximately 15 minutes following the incident at around 11:20am.

Principal Sue Healey sent a message to parents on the school’s internal communications platform after the incident, saying the student at the centre of the incident was “newly enrolled in our Special Education Centre” and was having “a challenging day”.

“During this challenging time, the student left the Special Education Centre to walk around the school,” she wrote.

“To help with managing this situation a lockdown was called, lasting approximately 15 mins, Police were called to assist with this situation.

“I would like to commend students and staff on how well they followed Lockdown procedures.”

It was reported at the time that a teacher may have been assaulted by the student.

But Ms Healey did not specifically mention any attempted assault of staff and the school returned to normal operations for the rest of the day.
