Violent crimes with alleged ‘offensive weapon’ in Tennant Creek results in charges against four men

A “violent” crime spree in Tennant Creek has seen four men charged after an alleged attempted robbery and break and enter, while using an “offensive weapon”, police said.

Police allege that the four men, aged between 18 and 23, attempted to rob two people on Paterson St on Monday evening around 8:45 pm and a short time later two of the men then allegedly attempted to unlawfully entre a Haddock St residence.

Police did not provide any more details about the alleged incidents or how both were classified as “attempted”.

A 19-year-old man was arrested at the Haddock St residence, police confirmed, and was charged with seven counts of aggravated assault, being armed with an “offensive weapon at night”, endangering occupants of a motor vehicle, furnishing a false name, disorderly conduct in a police station and possessing less than a trafickable schedule 2 substance, among other charges.

An 18-year-old was arrested the next day and charged with six counts of aggravated assault and being armed with an offensive weapon at night.

Two other men, aged 20 and 23, were charged with the same offences.

All four men were expected to appear in Alice Springs Local Court today.

“This type of violent behaviour will not be tolerated. Residents deserve to feel safe on their streets and within their own homes,” senior sergeant Glenn Bolger said in a statement.
