Major Crash detectives are still investigating the fatal crash that claimed the lives of a 25-year-old woman and an infant child on the Roper Highway turn-off, near the vicinity of Strangeways River on Friday afternoon.

Police, Fire and Ambulance rushed 80 km east of the Stuart Highway intersection after the incident was reported shortly before 5 pm. Police officers on the scene said it was a head-on collision between a truck and a sedan where a woman and an infant passenger died at the scene.

Another passenger, a 24-year-old woman was trapped and had to be extracted. She was treated at the scene and was airlifted by CareFlight along with the 22-year-old male driver to Royal Darwin Hospital.

The truck driver, however, was uninjured.

Both drivers tested negative for alcohol.

Friday’s car crash takes the Territory’s road toll to 31 this year, compared to 20 during the same period last year. There were a total of 35 road tolls in the Territory last year.

Inquiries by detectives from the Major Crash Investigation Unit are ongoing.
