Two rescued after boat failure near Melville Island over the weekend

NT Police have rescued two males after the motor of their vessel failed during a three-day expedition near Melville Island on Saturday, after they were forced to send distress signals.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Canberra picked up distress signals after the pair activated their EPIRB. A border force plane quickly located the vessel and directed a nearby commercial fishing boat to the pair.

The Water Police then towed the pair’s vessel safely back to Darwin.

“The skipper had sufficient food and water, however, there was missing safety equipment and out-of-date flares on board,” Superintendent James Gray-Spence said.

“Incidents like these are a timely reminder to make sure you have all the necessary safety equipment, including a registered EPIRB, before you venture out on Territory waters.”
