NT Police have sent their special tactical team to a remote community in the West Daly region following the discovery of two males with gunshot wounds in two separate incidents on Wednesday.

The two victims were rescued after police responded to numerous reports of disturbances, armed individuals, and multiple dangerous driving incidents in the remote community of Peppimenarti.

Police found the first victim, a 15-year-old male bleeding heavily from a shoulder wound caused by a rifle shot. He was taken to a remote community health clinic for immediate medical care and then flown to Darwin for treatment.

Another suspected firearm victim, a 21-year-old man, was discovered with a minor elbow injury sometime later. The man was treated at a local health clinic and released.

NT TRG officers was also sent into the community to aid local officers and restore order.

Commander Matt Hollamby said the community, located 324 km southwest of Darwin has been experiencing unrest during the last few months and that the police are working to remedy the situation asap.

“This is very concerning and we want to bring it to a resolution as quickly as we can for the safety of the other residents in the community,” he said.

“TRG was deployed to ensure the safety of the investigators and to bring calm to the community, that objective has been achieved.

“Investigations are continuing… we understand the gun was a rifle, not sure what calibre at this stage. We only know of one firearm involved in the disturbance so it’s reasonable to assume both injuries were caused by the same gun.”

Police are urging anyone who may have information regarding the incidents to contact them at 131 444.
