A man collecting crocodile eggs on a remote station near Daly River was attacked by a crocodile earlier today, NT Police said.
Remarkably, the man was reported as only suffering wounds to his right leg after the attack.
St John Ambulance received a report that the man had been collecting eggs on the station at some point on Thursday morning.
The victim was flown out of the area by private helicopter, NT Police said in a statement, and then transported by St John Ambulance to the Royal Darwin Hospital.
The man, whose age was not released, is currently undergoing surgery for his injuries, “which are considered serious but not life-threatening”, police said.
Details of how he fought off the crocodile and managed to survive the ordeal were not released.
“NT WorkSafe have been advised of the incident and will be carrying out inquiries,” police said in the statement.
