Two more NT Police officers were allegedly assaulted yesterday, this time in Wadeye after being pelted with rocks while attempting to arrest a man related to community unrest.

The latest assault on officers brings the total to nine officers this week alone.

NT Police said the two officers were arresting a 26-year-old man for allegedly committing “several offences” yesterday morning around 11:50am when a group of males approached and assisted the male to escape custody by throwing rocks at the officers.

The officers suffered minor injuries to their faces 26-year-old remains outstanding, police said in a statement.

“Police (were) responding to a call for assistance, where a member of the community has actively chosen to act in such a behaviour that contributes to community unrest,” said Assistant Commissioner Martin Dole.

“Officers do not deserve to be assaulted for upholding the law.”

Five officers were assaulted last weekend during an arrest in Alice Springs when a suspect kicked, punched and spat on the police. Another two were assaulted on Tuesday, also in Alice Springs, when a 16-year-old female “ripped a clump of hair” from an officer’s head and threw another to the ground during another arrest.

The NT Police Association have called on the Gunner Government to reform legislation to implement an automatic jail term if found guilty of assaulting police.

The government has not commented on the latest police assaults.
