UPDATED: NT Police say they are now treating the deaths of two adults and a baby who were found dead at an outstation north of Alice Springs on Sunday as a “domestic violence incident” after finding a gun at the scene.
Police had earlier said there were no public safety concerns while they continued to investigate the deaths of a 41-year-old man, a 40-year-old woman and an infant. The three people were discovered at a property 25km north of Alice Springs on Sunday afternoon.
For unknown reasons, the police had called the deaths a “critical incident”, which typically refers to an ongoing situation.
They provided few details on Sunday evening.
On Monday afternoon, police issued a statement to provide more details and said it was not an ongoing situation and there was no risk to the community.
“Police located a firearm at the scene and we are treating this as a domestic violence incident,” said Acting Commander Mark Grieve in the statement.
“There are no ongoing safety concerns for the community as a result of this incident.
“This was an horrific event, and our hearts go out to the family and community members affected by this tragedy.”
Acting Commander Grieve added that the NT Police’s Community Resilience and Engagement Command team along with Aboriginal Liaison Officers were providing support “to those involved”.
“We are also offering support to first responders and investigators involved,” he said.
“A team of Crime Command detectives are investigating this tragedy. A file will be prepared for the Coroner.”
