Extraordinary deal on healthcare between government and opposition

The Albanese administration and the Coalition have reached an unprecedented agreement concerning aged care, Sky News has reported. Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says an “extraordinary deal” between the government and opposition will see Australians who want to go into aged care pay up to $13,000 a year extra for their care. Australians who want to pay for their aged care through interest from refundable accommodation deposits will spend tens of thousands more in capital from those deposits to pay for the upkeep of aged care homes.

“It’s all about making the aged care system more sustainable for the federal budget, with a focus on people staying at home for longer,” Mr Clennell said. “The government has provided more funds for home care as part of the package – a system which enables elderly people to have their homes fitted out and services provided to keep them at home longer.”

PM Albanese hit back at Elon Musk after calling the government “fascists”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese hit back at Elon Musk on Saturday after the tech mogul called his government “fascists” for proposing laws that would fine social media giants for spreading misinformation, the Tribune reported. Australia introduced a “combating misinformation” bill last week, which includes sweeping powers to fine tech giants up to five per cent of their annual turnover for breaching online safety obligations. “Fascists,” Musk posted Thursday on his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. But Mr Albanese fired back at Musk, saying social media “has a social responsibility.” “If Mr Musk doesn’t understand that, that says more about him than it does about my government.”

Melbourne Airport is set to get a third runway after the federal government approved the project

The federal government has approved Melbourne Airport’s third runway with strict conditions, including noise sharing and a community health study, Sky News reported. Infrastructure and Transport Minister Catherine King confirmed on Friday that she had given her blessing to the $3 billion additional runway in Tullamarine. The approval came after a lengthy community consultation process, where residents raised concerns about the noise impacts of the 3,000-metre-long runway.

The third runway will be constructed parallel and 1.3 kilometres to the west of the airport’s existing north-south runway. It is scheduled to open in 2031. The airport said the third runway will generate 51,000 jobs and pump almost $6 billion into the Victorian economy annually.

Woman sustains injuries following skydiving incident in Queensland

A young woman has sustained spinal injuries following a skydiving incident in Queensland’s south on Sunday, news.com.au has reported. The 25-year-old female is known to be an experienced skydiver, having 30 jumps under her belt before the incident, which happened during a solo training jump at about 1:30 pm at Toogoolawah over the Brisbane Valley Highway. The woman was injured due to a hard landing at the Skydive Ramblers drop zone. Skydive Ramblers Toogoolawah chief instructor Ben Nordkamp commented, “Minor errors were made on approach for landing.” The woman has since been transported to Ipswich Hospital in stable condition. This incident comes just months after another man in his twenties was left fighting for life following a solo skydiving incident in the area that saw him hit an electricity pole on approach.
