Hot, dry weather for next three months—Bureau

Large swathes of Australia are set for below-average rainfall and a greater chance of record temperatures over the next three months, the Bureau of Meteorology said as the El Nino weather phenomenon brings hot, dry conditions. The bureau said it was at least 2.5 times more likely temperatures over the next three months would be among the top 20 per cent recorded for the period between 1982 and 2018, Reuters reported.

More ADF personnel and aircraft deployed in the Middle East

The Australian Government has deployed additional ADF personnel and aircraft to the Middle East as part of Operation Beech in response to the Hamas-Israel conflict, the Australian Government said. Deploying in a non-combat role, Australian Army personnel from Townsville and Brisbane, and two Royal Australian Air Force C-130J aircraft from Sydney, will join a C-17A Globemaster heavy transport aircraft and the ADF contingent already in the region. More than 800 Australians have now been airlifted from Israel since the first Australian Government-assisted departure flight on October 13.

Canberra to be the first to legislate the right to a healthy environment

Canberra could become the first place in Australia to give people a legal right to a healthy environment, with the ACT government introducing new human rights legislation, ABC News has reported. The Human Rights (Healthy Environment) Amendment Bill 2023 seeks to address the impacts of climate change and shore up the environment for future generations, according to the government. It will also allow people to report healthy environment breaches to the ACT Human Rights Commission.

Uber Pushes Fully Electric Car Service

Uber, the popular rideshare platform, has launched a fully electric car service in Australia as part of the company’s overall mission to become a zero-emissions platform in the country by 2040, the Environment Energy Leader reported. The new product, dubbed Comfort Electric, is available to Uber for Business customers, It is built for businesses and enables companies to create a company account for employees to expense rides and meals. The service is now available for Uber for Business customers in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and Adelaide. The product also offers companies the opportunity to track their carbon emissions data through the platform’s sustainability insights dashboard.
