Optus outage to be investigated as consumers seek recompense
Australia said it would investigate an outage at telco Optus that cut off internet and phone connections to nearly half of its population, causing widespread chaos and leading some small business customers to seek compensation, Reuters has reported. More than 10 million Australians were hit by the 12-hour network blackout at the nation’s second-largest telco for much of Wednesday, triggering fury and frustration among customers and raising wider concerns about the telecommunications infrastructure.

Netflix spends $1 billion on Australian-related programming
Netflix has spent more than $1 billion on Australian-related programming since 2019, adding further fuel to the battle between subscription TV and free-to-air media companies over viewers’ access to content, MediaWeek reported. Netflix promoted its investment in Australian storytelling which includes $500 million on programming for children and young adults and a further $450 million on adult drama programs over the last four years. Netflix revealed that commissioned, co-commissioned and acquired first-run Australian content had made up 95% of Netflix’s total Australian programming investment in 2022/23.

Nestlé shortlists three companies for its $50 advertising campaign
Nestlé has shortlisted three agencies for its Australian media pitch, AdNews has reported. The shortlist includes incumbent agency IPG’s UM housed out of Sydney, Publicis’ Starcom and one agency from WPP’s GroupM. Nestlé is home to well-known brands including KitKat, Allen’s, Nescafe, Milo, Maggi, Uncle Tobys, Nespresso and Purina. The company’s latest local campaign is Milo’s Mix It Up, which saw the world’s largest hot tub of Milo (world record pending) aiming to refamiliarise teens and young adults with the drink, while also introducing them to Milo Pro, a new protein product.

Jerry Seinfeld to return to Australia next year for his first national stand-up tour
Funnyman Jerry Seinfeld is heading to Australia with a new show in June 2024. It will be nearly seven years since the Seinfeld star last performed in Australia after his last sold-out Australian show in 2017, The Canberra Times reported. Seinfeld will be touring Perth, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne before heading to New Zealand where he will be performing in Auckland and Christchurch. The presale is open to Telstra Plus members from Tuesday, November 14.
