PM Albanese: Julian Assange’s freedom exemplifies standing up for Australians
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the release of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is what “standing up for Australians” looks like, Sky News reported. “Julian Assange is on his way home to Australia,” he said. “Regardless of your views about his activities, which will be varied, Mr Assange’s case has dragged on for too long. I’ve said repeatedly that there was nothing to be gained by his continued incarceration, and I am pleased that he is on his way home to Australia to reunite with his family here.” He said, “This outcome has been the product of careful, patient, and determined work, work I am very proud of.”

Inflation rises to 4 per cent from 3.6 per cent
Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor has responded to the recent inflation data released from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Sky News has reported. The monthly CPI indicator for May climbed to 4 per cent, from 3.6 per cent, putting pressure on the Reserve Bank of Australia to raise interest rates in August. “Now, the important point about this is this is not what we are seeing elsewhere in the world; this is homegrown inflation here in Australia,” he said. “Australians are paying a high price for it, and Australians are being failed.” Mr Taylor claimed Jim Chalmers “can’t spin his way out of this one” and the Treasurer was “running out of spin”.
Tourism
International tourists are spending more and staying longer
SBS reported that International tourists spent $30.9 billion in Australia in the year to March 2024, slightly above pre-pandemic spending levels, according to data from Tourism Research Australia. Trips to Australia were up to 84 per cent of 2019 levels, average spend per trip increased by 25 per cent, and nights away exceeded pre-pandemic levels, with an average stay of 37 nights. Acting Western Australian Tourism Minister John Carey said the state was tracking ahead of target growth in visitor spending at $17.9 billion across international and domestic tourists.
