Indigenous recognition bill passes the first hurdle

Legislation to hold a referendum to recognise Australia’s Indigenous people in the constitution cleared its first parliamentary hurdle after passing in the House of Representatives, Reuters has reported. Australians will be asked to vote in a referendum, between October and December, on whether they support altering the constitution to include “Voice to Parliament”, a committee that can advise the parliament on matters affecting its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people. In a final vote in the lower house of parliament, 121 lawmakers voted in favour of the bill – called the Constitution Alteration bill – while 25 voted against it, which included members from the National Party and the main opposition Liberal Party.

Government loses bid to cancel the lease for new Russian embassy site

The Australian government has suffered an embarrassing defeat in its attempts to turf the Russian government off the site of its new embassy in Canberra. The federal court ordered on Wednesday that the Commonwealth’s attempt to terminate the lease was “invalid and of no effect”. The National Capital Authority alleged that the Russian embassy had sat on the site for too long without developing it and that Russia was attempting to use the new site to enhance its intelligence capabilities, The Guardian reported.

Australia seeks to limit plastic waste

Australian Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek has been in Paris, France, for talks on a proposed global plastics treaty. A United Nations committee is meeting to work on a global pact that aims to end plastic waste. Australia said it would double its recycling capacity by 2025 by investing in 48 new waste facilities. Authorities have warned previously that the amount of plastic waste in the oceans could outweigh the fish population by 2050. The Voice of America has reported.
