Support for Australia’s landmark Indigenous referendum continues to dip

Latest opinion polls show that a referendum to constitutionally recognise Australia’s Indigenous people would fail if held now, Reuters has reported. Australians will vote in a landmark referendum later this year on whether they support altering the constitution to include a “Voice to Parliament”, an Indigenous committee to advise parliament on matters affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people. A Guardian poll this week showed more Australians are planning to vote no in the referendum than yes, a first in the survey. Other polls also showed a majority in most states would vote against the constitutional change.

Amazon builds the largest warehouse in Melbourne

Industrial property powerhouse Logos is developing a new warehouse for Amazon in northern Melbourne that will span 209,000 sq m across four levels at the Australian-Super-owned Craigieburn Logistics Estate to become the largest in Australia, The Urban Developer has reported. The new centre is expected to take two years to build and will be equipped with robotics technology to house up to 25 million smaller items. The Melbourne Robotics fulfilment centre will be Amazon’s sixth operational site in Melbourne and will be a part of the company’s fulfilment and logistics network in Victoria.

Environment

El Nino may endanger Great Barrier Reef

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef could deteriorate if warming ocean temperatures spark another mass coral bleaching event later this year. Sections of the reef had been showing promising signs of recovery until a bleaching event in 2022 turned swathes of the vibrant coral a sickly, pale white. Australia’s weather bureau has said it is “likely” an El Nino weather pattern will develop over the country in the coming weeks, bringing warmer ocean temperatures to the Pacific — and the renewed risk of coral bleaching. The reef is one of Australia’s premier tourist drawcards and putting it on the in-danger list could substantially tarnish its allure for international visitors, ABS-CBN News reported.

Nauru Airline’s operations have been based in Brisbane for 20 years, registered under Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority and operating to Australia’s national aviation standards. The debut of the new-generation Boeing 737-800F, which is the first of its kind in the Australian regional market, is capable of transporting an impressive 23.9 tons of cargo across extensive distances for the Nauruan carrier, Aviation Source News has reported.
