A reckless driving incident in Alice Springs involving a stolen vehicle colliding with several taxis Thursday night has the NT Police asking for the public’s assistance, with one of the taxi drivers reportedly attacked twice and threatened with an unspecified weapon.
Police said the same suspects carried out a series of four assaults on three taxis within 30 minutes.
Around 10pm on Thursday, a residence in Larapinta was broken into, resulting in the theft of a Ford Ranger, while no one was home.
At approximately 2:30am, police received reports indicating that the stolen vehicle had pursued a taxi and collided with it, causing significant damage, but the taxi driver was unharmed.
Ten minutes later, the Ford Ranger was seen near another taxi parked outside a hospital. According to police, a young male exited the vehicle and allegedly threatened the taxi driver with a “blunt weapon”, demanding money. The driver complied and handed over a small amount of cash before the boy returned to the vehicle and fled the scene.
Ten minutes after that, police received reports of a third taxi being targeted by the stolen Ford. It is alleged the vehicle chased and struck the cab while navigating through the parking area of Lasseters Casino.
The taxi driver was not injured, and the stolen vehicle fled the area.
At 3:10am, on Albrecht Drive, the Ford rammed the same taxi that had been targeted earlier. The taxi driver attempted to drive away but had to pull over due to damage sustained to his vehicle.
Police said that a group of youths approached him with the blunt weapon, threatening him again and forcing him to surrender more cash.
The suspects then abandoned the stolen Ranger a short distance away, and authorities have confirmed that the vehicle has been recovered.
As of Friday afternoon, the suspects are still at large.
