A three-month-old female infant was in hospital with serious injuries after a man allegedly attacked her and the woman carrying her, in an alleged assault in an unspecified area in the Victoria Daly region on Tuesday afternoon, NT Police said.

NT Police spokesman Rob Cross alleged, in a statement on Thursday afternoon, that around 5:30pm, a 19-year-old woman was holding the infant when they were both assaulted by a 20-year-old man.

Mr Cross said the infant had sustained serious injuries. But details about the baby’s condition were not provided. The woman meanwhile had suffered minor injuries.

Police did not say if the woman was the baby’s mother or if she knew the alleged offender or where the alleged attack was said to have happened.

They woman and the baby were flown to Darwin for medical treatment at 1am on Wednesday.

The alleged offender was charged with unlawfully causing serious harm and aggravated assault and will front Katherine Local Court on Friday.
