In the 20 months since founding, the NT Independent has published more than two thousand stories including exclusives that only this publication had the courage to pursue.
The NT Independent believes that the media are the watchdogs of democracy as it promotes and protects the rights of the people. It plays a crucial role in strengthening democratic institutions. The NT Independent was established to contribute to this end by promoting investigative reporting on current issues in the NT and on matters of large public interest.
We aim to be a catalyst for social debate and promote critical thinking. We believe informed Territorians will form a progressive Territory.
The NT Independent was recently recognised for its role in improving the Territory’s democracy, picking up two major accolades at the 2021 NT Media Awards.
We won Best News Coverage (print/text) and Best Crime/Court Reporting (all media).
Editor Christopher Walsh and digital editor David Wood were given the Best Crime Reporting award for their series on the failures of the NT Police executive and media team to report serious sexual assaults – some involving children – in a timely manner.
We have offered you our news for free since we launched, and we are seeking your support to help us continue our mission by donating to the NT Independent to cover our operational costs.
If you have the capacity to donate the equivalent of a daily coffee ($5), a weekly coffee ($25) or maybe even more, it will all go a long way to enabling the NT Independent to continue.
There is a lot more that needs to be uncovered in the NT.
A regular monthly donation has the most impact. All donations are 100% confidential. Here’s the link to donate.
