A 51-year-old rural area man has been charged with bestiality after police uncovered a “significant number” of videos of the man allegedly engaged in “abhorrent” sexual acts with an animal during a raid of his house on Friday.

NT Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team (JACET) arrested the man at a McMinns Lagoon property on Friday after receiving an email containing video of animal cruelty which had been posted online.

“The contents of the videos is abhorrent,” said Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Jon Beer.

“If members of the public came across this material they would be revolted.

“It is incomprehensible that an individual could imagine such acts let alone carry them out. The depravity is deeply disturbing.”

It was not revealed what animal the man is alleged to have assaulted.

The joint taskforce, which includes NT Police and Australian Federal Police, executed a search warrant at the man’s residence in the rural area on Friday where “further material was found including a significant number of videos depicting animal cruelty and bestiality,” police said.

The man’s computers, mobile phones, hard drives and digital cameras containing alleged evidence of the animal cruelty were seized by investigators.

The man has been charged with 15 counts of aggravated animal cruelty and two counts of bestiality under the NT Criminal Code.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Darwin Local Court on Tuesday.
