Are you a part of the problem? We have the solution to help make the NT a better place

We know that exposing the Gunner Government and other powerful people has made the NT Independent a controversial brand for some. But you can safely align yourself with a powerful force for social good, and help improve your Northern Territory at the same time.

We don’t apologise for holding the powerful to account on behalf of Territorians. That’s our basic job. Our raison d’etre, to say it in a fancy French way. Or, we love keeping the bastards honest, to keep it more Territorian.

But we know that because the world doesn’t always work as it should, there is perceived risk, a fear about being seen as a supporter of the NT Independent.

As our body of work grows, so does the esteem our investigative work is held in, and the knowledge by the powerful that they are being watched also increases, so the power balance too begins to shift.

Governments that try to silence the free press, or persecute those that dare challenge them, like the Gunner Government has done to us, or other Territorians, are not operating as ethical and transparent representatives of the people.

Nor is the NT Police Commissioner when he threatens to find whistleblowers who are exposing problems in the force.

Nor is a department head when they try and retrospectively cover something up that the NT Independent has already exposed.

People speaking freely have never made society worse. The opposite happens.

Yes, there may be short-term pain as toxic truths are aired, but in the end, free speech has only ever contributed to societies being better.

Some people are not comfortable speaking out, and most of us do nothing and quietly complain in closed social circles. Others might create a fake social media profile and take to the comments sections of many pages to have a say.

Very few of us speak our minds without fear or favour. This is especially the case here in the NT, where the cost of doing so seems simply too high.

The reality is that individuals and businesses can do a lot more to help the Territory be the best it can, yet often choose to complain rather than make the difference they can.

This does not always mean putting your hand in your pocket. The free press is your conduit, and the NT Independent needs your support in many ways.

The NT Independent holds whistleblowers and the information they provide sacred. Protection of our sources is central to our reputation and our honour.

Calling, emailing, or texting one of our journalists will never lead to you being identified unless you choose to be.

If you have information that will lead to the NT improving, and you don’t come forward, are you a part of the problem?

Don’t be that person. If you know where some information is, go and get it, or tell us where it is. The standard you walk past is the standard you accept. And the standard we have here in the NT at the moment is unacceptable.

Maybe you don’t have a secret that will change the world. But you can share our stories, share our page, request your friends to like the page. Another story read is another person informed, and someone who may become that little bit more engaged in making the NT better.

Maybe you just want to make a difference, and you have some time to spare. If this is you, we have never met a volunteer we didn’t like. Maybe you can help run an event or help us launch our merchandise store?

There are some businesses that don’t want things to change, but most businesses want to compete on a fair playing field in an open and transparent manner; a vital part of this is having a free and independent news outlet. If you benefit from advertising, please consider us for your advertising.

With every contract we show to be corrupt, with every action we expose as unethical or worse, with every name shamed, we are reducing the chances of that happening in the future.

If you value this, then make sure we survive and don’t be a part of the problem. What do you want to stand for?

Please support us in whichever way you can.
