Thousands from across the Territory will be attending this year’s Barunga Festival which will be held from August 12 to 14 at the remote community in the Arnhem region.

Highlights for this year’s cultural celebration include concerts from the Eylandt Band, traditional dancing from Groote Eylandt Bungul, spear throwing demos, bush tucker tastings, weaving workshops and other fun activities.

“Since 1985, the Barunga Festival has provided an opportunity for visitors from all over Australia and the world to learn more about the Arnhem region’s rich cultural traditions and fascinating history,” Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Selena Uibo said.

“After the event was rescheduled from its original June timeslot, we are looking forward to delivering an even bigger program that the whole family can enjoy.”

The festival focuses on Indigenous community life and will pay homage to the 1988 Barunga Statement presented to Prime Minister Bob Hawke by Aboriginal leaders.

“This out-of-season Barunga event has generated much interest from a new audience who normally wouldn’t be in the Territory at this time of the year. Barunga 2022 is shaping as a cultural extravaganza with many activities to participate in,” Barunga Festival Coordinator Angela Kelly said.

The upcoming event will also host numerous food vendors, sporting matches throughout the weekend, and an inflatable water slide and jumping castle for the kids.

Tickets for next week’s Barunga Festival are available at www.barungafestival.com.au/.
