Territorians are invited to participate in the tenth annual Aussie Bird Count, which asks people to spend 20 minutes bird spotting using a bird finder app.

The count is run by Bird Life Australia, a not-for-profit bird habitat conservation advocacy organisation, and national public affairs manager Sean Dooley said the annual data collected from the count provided the group with valuable insights into the state of native birds across the country.

“The annual count seeks to assess the long term impacts of environmental and human made threats on native birds, encompassing concerns such as increased mortality rates, heightened vulnerability to predators, and the disruption of their natural habitats,” he said.

“Participation in this year’s count will enable bird experts to understand more about state-based trends, identify if these trends are continuing for declining species, and help us determine the reasons for the declines.”

Mr Dooley said they hoped Australians would set a new record and count more than five million birds.

The count runs from October 16 to 22.

People can sign up to the count at the Aussie Birds Count website, and download the app or use the web form.
