NT Police are investigating multiple armed disturbances in Ngukurr over the weekend that saw a 14-year-old boy airlifted out of the community Saturday afternoon after being speared in the back, police said.

Two family groups in the community first engaged in a disturbance on Friday evening, police said, with “a number of people…allegedly armed with weapons”.

No injuries were reported at that time, but tensions escalated on Saturday afternoon, with police being called about a further disturbance involving weapons.

It does not appear that police attended the community during the two incidents.

Around 5:35pm Saturday, police were notified that the 14-year-old boy “had been speared in the middle of his back”.

“Police attended the local health clinic and spoke with the youth and his family,” police media director Mark Wilton said in a statement on Monday.

“He was subsequently medically evacuated by CareFlight for further treatment and remains in a stable condition.

“Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disturbances and are working closely with community elders and local leadership groups to de-escalate tensions and prevent further incidents.
