Chief Minister’s mate appointed permanent judge, two others made acting judges in midst of court turmoil

The Finocchiaro CLP Government has moved to deal with a backlog of cases in the court system and a major lack of judicial officers by appointing two new acting judges, while also making the Chief Minister’s family friend Steve Ledek a permanent judge, which follows reports the Territory’s court system had come to a “screaming halt” in recent weeks.

Public pepper spray trial not ready to roll out, police union says

The Finocchiaro CLP Government is not ready to roll out its plan to allow the public to purchase pepper spray next month, the union representing the Territory’s police officers has warned, raising unaddressed concerns over the lack of mandatory training for safe usage, vague legal thresholds for its use that will cause police an increased workload to investigate, and the lack of a “real-time database” to ensure criminals are not buying the spray.
