A Toyota troop carrier that was involved in a fatal road crash that killed a 76-year-old male tourist near Delemere on Wednesday was stolen from a residence in Katherine, NT Police revealed on Thursday.

The two-vehicle collision occurred around 6:30am on the Victoria Highway, about 70km from Katherine, involving a silver Mitsubishi Pajero which was carrying the deceased man and three others, including a 70-year-old woman, a 63-year-old woman and a 63-year-old man, who were all taken to Katherine Hospital in critical condition.

The 25-year-old driver of the stolen Toyota was taken to hospital as well, but in a stable condition.

NT Police later confirmed the four people in the Pajero were tourists from interstate.

Police revealed on Thursday that the Toyota 76-series troop carrier was stolen from a residence on Heron Crescent in Katherine, but did not say when the vehicle was alleged to have been stolen.

Police are asking for anyone with information about the matter to contact them on 131 444.

The crash disrupted traffic on the Victoria Highway for most of the day Wednesday as police investigated.

Emergency services, including St John Ambulance, Police, and the NT Fire and Rescue Service, responded to the scene.

Lives lost on Territory roads this year now stands at 23.

Note: This story was updated to reflect that the man killed in the collision was an interstate tourist.
