UPDATED: Police are investigating after a severed human leg was found along the Stuart Highway near Coolalinga Tuesday morning and have not ruled out that the individual missing part of their leg may still be alive.

Detectives said the remains were discovered Tuesday morning about 10:30am by a passing motorist, sparking a major incident, with dozens of officers and a forensic pathologist sent to the scene.

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Morrisey said the pathologist confirmed the “remains to be a lower leg of a dark-skinned human being”.

He added that police do not know how the leg came to be on the side of the road.

The Stuart Hwy was closed between the Howard Springs lights and Virginia Rd as police searched the area, but had not found any other remains by late afternoon.

Snr Sgt Morrisey said police could not confirm if the individual was dead or alive and were making inquiries with local hospitals and clinics in the region.

He later said in a statement that there have been “no reports to hospitals or clinics with an injury of this severity”.

He said police believed the leg appeared near the highway in the last 24 hours and asked anyone with dashcam footage in the area from Monday, or anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

“We believe the incident happened sometime in the last 24 hours, so we are asking for witnesses or anyone who may have been driving in the area, who has dashcam footage since Monday afternoon, to contact police on 131 444 and quote reference 10020603.”

A crime scene has been established with investigators currently on scene.

Police originally closed the road before 11am, stating that it was a “major incident”.
