NT Police will continue patrols with rangers in Litchfield National Park after a number of Territorians were caught not complying with the park’s regulations at the weekend.

It was nowhere near as bad as last weekend, but police said the patrols will continue for the foreseeable future.

“We’ve got a plan at Litchfield where you will see police working with rangers probably for the next four to five weeks, maybe longer if required, until people get used to what this new normal looks like,” NT Police COVID-19 Incident Controller Commander David Proctor said.

Several infringement notices were also handed to Litchfield’s visitors after they were caught jumping off rocks. They were immediately kicked out of the park, according to NT Parks and Wildlife, Northern Australia Parks director Lincoln Wilson.

“While the majority was respectful and well-behaved, there was some disappointing behaviour on Sunday from a small number of Territorians,” Mr Wilson said.

However, Mr Wilson said the majority abided by the park’s rules and regulations. NT Police also observed a significant improvement in the behaviour of visitors over the previous week.

The Northern Territory Police will also maintain patrolling in licensed premises to monitor people’s compliance of the stage two restrictions, they said.

As of this weekend, NT Police reported “no issues identified” with the 179 compliance checks they have undertaken.

Police have noticed an improvement by businesses and patrons as they adjust to the changes associated with lifting of restrictions and the Chief Health Officers directions.

Random breath tests were also conducted over the weekend with 343 drivers tested, all of which tested negative for drugs and alcohol.

COVID-19 Incident Controller Commander David Proctor said the NT Police are pleased with how the public had responded to the lifting of the restrictions in a positive way and in a responsible manner.

“The overall behaviour of the public this weekend lays a good foundation for the relaxing of further restrictions on June 5, 2020,” Mr Proctor said.
