Residents of Daly River region prepare for possible flood

Around 330 residents living in the Daly River region are on standby for evacuation as the Bureau of Meteorology warns of potential moderate flooding.

Authorities are on alert for a possible evacuation of residents should the river reach moderate flood levels on Thursday night. But it is not expected to reach major flood levels.

NT Police said they have sent additional staff to assist in community preparations while the NT Emergency Services has sent three additional boats to the community in case they are required to help move people in low-lying areas.

Incident Controller Commander Janelle Tonkin said there has been no evacuation order yet as the thresholds for evacuation have not been met.

“The community is experienced with flood preparation and know what to do if needed. There is no request or requirement for residents to leave the community at this time,” she said.

Current forecasting indicates the river may reach a peak between 13.6 and 13.8 metres.

Community Facebook page Perry’s on the Daly had posted that as of 3:45pm Wednesday the river had reached 11.23 metres.

On Wednesday afternoon, the BOM said minor flooding was occurring at Daly River Station and was expected to be around February 2014 levels.

The Daly River Station was at 12.72 metres and rising slowly, with minor flooding. It is likely to exceed the moderate flood level (13.1m) overnight Thursday into Friday.

“Widespread rainfall totals of 150 – 300 mm have been recorded in the Daly River catchment in the past week and many rivers and creeks have risen strongly in response,” the BOM reported.

“Upstream rivers have had multiple peaks during the past week and that water is now making its way through the lower Daly River.”

BOM said rainfall was expected to ease.

In 2014, the river reached 13.7m and the community was not evacuated. At that height, minor flooding occurs in some houses, however affected residents can be accommodated either with friends or at the local school.

“In the event an evacuation is required, residents will be bussed into Darwin where they will be accommodated in an evacuation centre at Foskey’s Pavilion at the Darwin Showgrounds,” Cdr Tonkin said.
