The continued sustainability and prosperity of the Territory’s estimated $270 million recreational fishing and tourism sector is dependent on catch quotas and licence buybacks being introduced, along with gillnets being phased out, the Amateur Fishermen’s Association of the Northern Territory has said.
The calls for the NT Government to make changes follows the Northern Land Council’s announcement last week that Yolngu traditional owners have halted commercial barramundi fishing using gillnets in Indigenous waters in north-east Arnhem Land.
