UPDATED: NT Police say they have apprehended a 30-year-old man who escaped prison in Alice Springs on Monday evening after a night on the run.

Police said Alek Brumby had escaped the “reintegration facility” at the Alice Springs Correctional Centre and were seeking the public’s help to locate him.

Although authorities said that Mr Brumby is not considered a risk to public safety, they were warning people not to approach him and instead contact police immediately.

Two and a half hours after notifying the public of the escape – the day after he had escaped – police issued a statement saying they had located Brumby.

“General duties officers together with members of Strike Force Viper located and arrested the man without incident, at a property south of the Gap this morning,” the statement said.

“Police would like to thank members of the public for their assistance.”

NT Police did not detail how Brumby escaped prison.
