A police officer was allegedly punched in the head and then used OC spray while trying to arrest a teenager who was allegedly among a group who broke into two businesses in a shopping centre in Palmerston on Sunday night, NT Police said.
NT Police director of communications Mark Wilton said two men and two male youths were arrested in relation to an aggravated burglary and the assault of the police officer.
He said that about 10:40pm Sunday, police were told a group of up to five allegedly broke into the two businesses at a shopping centre on Mannikan Court in Bakewell.
“The offenders fled the scene on foot prior to police arrival,” Mr Wilton said.
“A short time later, the offenders were sighted on police CCTV on Emery Avenue. Strike Force Trident and general duties members were deployed and a foot pursuit commenced.
“It is alleged a 14-year-old male challenged a police officer, during which a nearby 23-year-old male, not believed to be involved with the unlawful entries, punched the officer to the head.”
Mr Wilton said the officer used OC spray and both alleged offenders were arrested while the boy was also arrested in relation to the unlawful entries.
There are still three alleged offenders on the run while police said the four in custody are expected to be charged with unspecified charges.
