UPDATED: Two men, 20-year-old Jamie Lauder and 23-year-old Justin Roberts, who escaped Holtze prison on Saturday were re-arrested Tuesday morning in Palmerston, NT Police said.
It was still not explained why the police did not make the public aware of the jailbreak until Monday afternoon.
Police said the two men were arrested with assistance by detectives from serious crimes, dog operations, general duty officers and CCTV operators.
The police had sought public assistance to locate the two absconders, but did not say if the pair were considered dangerous or what crimes they committed to be incarcerated.
“Both men remain in custody, expected to be conveyed back into custody of NT Corrections later today,” police said in a statement.
“Police would like to thank the members of public who provided vital information in relation to the whereabouts of the absconders.”
Police had said Corrections made the report after identifying the two – via CCTV footage – fleeing the low-security compound. Both were wearing yellow prison shirts and khaki shorts at that time.
It was not revealed when Corrections discovered the men were missing.
