A driver who hit a pedestrian, leaving her in a critical condition, had alcohol in his system and is expected to be charged today, NT Police said.

Police director of communications Mark Wilton said in a statement that police are calling for information from the public after the female pedestrian was hit by a red vehicle on Emery Avenue in Woodroofe about 11.30pm Monday.

“The driver initially failed to stop at the scene or render assistance, but subsequently pulled over and called emergency services a short time later. Police located the driver and conducted a breath test, which returned a positive reading,” he said.

Police said the woman was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition with head injuries.

Mr Wilton said the 36-year-old male driver was taken into custody and is expected to be charged later today while police were continuing to investigate.

Police are asking anyone who saw the woman being hit, and anyone who has dash cam or CCTV footage, to phone them on 131 444 (quote reference number P24190150), or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers by calling 1800 333 000 or through the website.
