A 27-year-old Alice Springs man has been arrested and charged for allegedly targeting women with thousands of sexually threatening phone calls, NT Police said, while urging more victims to contact them.

Police said the man allegedly made over 12,000 calls to phone numbers “within Australia” beginning on June 19. It is alleged he targeted women through the calls, making sexual threats.

It was not disclosed how the man obtained the phone numbers.

The threatening calls were not reported to NT Police until July 29, police said, “after the number was identified as being located in Alice Springs”.

The man was identified and arrested on Wednesday with his phone seized by police.

He was charged with five counts of using a carriage service to harass, menace, or cause offence under federal laws. He was expected to appear in Alice Springs Local Court today.

“Due to the circumstances of the alleged offending, the NTPF believes more victims may have been impacted,” police media director Mark Wilton said.
