Police are investigating a fire that appears to have broke out in a carpark beneath a unit complex in Darwin’s inner suburb of Larrakeyah early Wednesday morning.

NT Fire and Rescue Service said around 3:12am complex residents reported that they heard explosions and flames could be seen in the carpark in the building in Merkur Court.

Approximately 20 residents from nine units had to be evacuated, Acting Deputy Chief Fire Officer Joshua Fischer said. He said no one was injured.

Thirteen firefighters from Darwin and Casuarina responded to the incident within three minutes of the first call and the fire was brought under control within 15 minutes.

It was fully extinguished at around 3:40am, firies said.

“This morning serves as an important reminder as to how quickly fires can start and spread, and the importance of working smoke alarms and having a written and practiced home fire escape plan,” Mr Fischer said.

Reports of damages caused by the fire were not yet detailed. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire.
