An 18-year-old man, who had escaped from police multiple times, has been arrested over his alleged perpetration of domestic violence and serious property offences NT Police said, but the agency gave no details of the alleged crimes, including when they were said to have been committed, and how long the man had been on the run.
Sergeant Andrew Thomson said in a statement the man had avoided arrest on multiple occasions, including by swimming across the Katherine River, running through residential yards on various occasions, and being part of a police car chase.
He said that on Monday a police officer with dog helped Katherine police arrest the man.
“Upon arrival at the scene, the man fled through the community,” he said.
“The dog picked up on the man’s scent and began tracking him into the nearby scrubland, through a dried creek bed and thick grass into a second creek bed, where the man laid low before the dog spotted him.”
Sergeant Thomsom said police told the man to stop but he ran instead, and then the dog caught him, and his handler arrested him.
He said police expected to charge the man on Monday but did not give details of his alleged offences, when they were said to have happened, or what the charges were expected to be.
