Sonia Kennon, the wife of Police Commissioner Michael Murphy’s good mate Peter Kennon, whose promotion led to the downfall of the top cop, was herself promoted twice over a short period of time under the Murphy regime, taking her into the lower reaches of management after allegedly failing the Senior Sergeant’s exam multiple times before that requirement for promotion was removed, sources have told the NT Independent.
An Office of the Independent Commissioner Against Corruption investigation into Mr Murphy’s appointment of Mr Kennon found Mr Murphy engaged in improper conduct amounting to “negligence and incompetence” concerning the mismanagement of a conflict of interest in appointing Mr Kennon as an Assistant Commissioner in April 2024, with the ICAC stating the two were “close” and “long-time friends”, with the extent of that friendship not disclosed, but it was later report that Mr Murphy was the best man at the Kennons’ wedding.

Did Lia realise the size of the problem initially? Chalker went on a similar promotion spree after Zach Rolfe was charged. Time to change the processes for executive appointments.

In relation to Mr Murphy you also need to note that he first started his training as a police officer in 1997. In the eleven years he has gone from Probationary Constable to Constable, Senior Constable, Sergeant, Senior Sergeant to Superintendent. That’s five ranks in this time or an average of about two years at each rank. This includes duties and crime. In reality you need to ask just how much experience can you get in actual policing in this time to the point you fully understand policing issues and those of the staff you now command?
