NT Police have arrested a man who allegedly knocked a woman unconscious and raped her in a Casuarina street in the middle of the afternoon and are calling for witnesses to come forward.

Police said they responded to a report of a male allegedly engaged in sexual intercourse with an unconscious female on a footpath along Ellengowan Drive in Casuarina at around 2:50pm on Thursday.

Police said it is alleged the man bashed the female causing injuries to her face and knocking her out before raping her.

A 48-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to the Palmerston watchhouse where he was charged with sexual intercourse without consent and gross indecency in public.

Police said they are looking for witnesses to the incident.

“Police have spoken with a number of witnesses however, we believe there were more witnesses in the area at the time who have not come forward yet,” said Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Gavin Hopwood.

“Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has dash-cam footage of area, between 2pm and 3pm, is urged to make contact with us on 131 444. Please quote reference number 9972266.”

The man was remanded to appear in court today, police said.
