A 24-year-old male was arrested by the NT Police Sunday afternoon in relation to a hit-and-run incident in the Darwin CBD overnight Saturday, in which a 50-year-old man was struck by a blue Toyota Hilux dual-cab vehicle while crossing Mitchell Street that saw him thrown through the air and into a parked car before landing on the road, police said.
Police had issued a statement Sunday morning calling for the driver to turn himself in after allegedly leaving the scene around 12:30am. They later issued a statement to say the alleged driver was arrested at a residence in Woolner sometime Sunday afternoon and is now in custody at the Palmerston watch house.
Charges were not filed immediately.
Police said the Hilux did not stop and drove away from the scene, running a red light at the Mitchell and Daly Streets intersection before leaving the CBD via Daly and the Stuart Highway.
Numerous witnesses came forward to help the victim while the driver of the car that the pedestrian hit remained on the scene and awaited the arrival of the police.
Emergency services responded promptly and provided treatment to the male at the scene before transporting him to Royal Darwin Hospital for further evaluation of his injuries, and was last reported to be in stable condition.
Police are now encouraging witnesses to come forward and are actively seeking the identity of the driver.
“Police are asking anyone with information to make contact on 131 444 and quote reference P25180688,” a statement said. “Anonymous reports can be made through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via https://crimestoppersnt.com.au/.”
Meanwhile, a 43-year-old man turned himself in to the NT Police a week after an alleged hit-and-run in Leanyer, which occurred on June 27.
Police alleged that a white Holden Commodore station wagon hit a couple who were unloading groceries from their vehicle parked on Leanyer Drive.
The woman sustained serious injuries, while the man had minor injuries.
The station wagon was confiscated, and the suspected driver was expected to face multiple charges on Friday evening.
