Two “family groups” in Darwin’s northern suburbs allegedly used an axe and “sticks” to inflict injuries to “a number of people” early Saturday morning, culminating in a stolen vehicle being used to allegedly run a man down on McMillans Road, NT Police said.

Police said Darwin Traffic Operations members arrived on the scene moments after the man was allegedly hit by the stolen car, pursuing the vehicle until it crashed into a nearby fence with the occupants fleeing the scene.

“The incident appears to have rolled from one scene to the next, with police identifying two more people with injuries suffered from earlier altercations and a trail of destruction caused by the stolen vehicle damaging a hotel, the front of a business and a number of objects in the front carpark,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Brett Cottier in a statement.

“Detectives from Crime Command have been investigating this incident since the early hours of Saturday morning and have continued their enquiries throughout the weekend.”

Police did not specify the time of the motor vehicle incident or when the other alleged assaults occurred or where.

They also did not explain what happened to the occupants of the stolen car after it crashed and how they appear to have been able to elude police.

Nevertheless, the police called on the public to assist.

“A number of persons of interest have been identified by police, and investigations continue,” Sgt Cottier said.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information which would assist with investigations is urged to contact police on 131 222 or report it via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and reference PROMIS 10036477.”
