A 20-year-old Palmerston man has been charged with raping a 14-year-old girl over the weekend who was known to him, NT Police said.

It’s the third alleged case of child rape publicly reported in the last two days, which includes a seven-year-old in Tennant Creek and a boy in East Arnhem.

Police said in a statement that the 14-year-old Palmerston girl reported the alleged assault to police on Sunday, the day after the incident.

She said she had been assaulted by “a person known to her”, police said.

Police media manager Rob Cross said following investigations, police arrested the 20-year-old man on Monday and charged him with four counts of sexual intercourse with a child under 16.

He was scheduled to appear in Darwin Local Court today.
