Fossils of an early relative of the wombat with a powerful bite and a possum with unusually large fangs have been discovered in the Northern Territory by palaeontologists from Flinders University that have helped solve a long-standing evolutionary puzzle.
The fossil remains, deposited 25 million years ago, in the late Oligocene period were found in 2014, 2020 and last year near the small Arrernte village of Pwerte Marnte Marnte in Central Australia.
