Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Morrissey said in a statement sent just before 10am Wednesday, that at 8:20pm on Tuesday, police received reports that a group was having a fight on Mitchell Street near the intersection of Nuttall Place.
The Nuttall Place Mitchell St intersection is where Monsoons Bar sits, close to Knuckey St.
He said two woman had wounds and were taken to Royal Darwin Hospital, a 28-year-old in a serious condition, and a 33-year-old in a stable condition.
No further details were given about what happened, or what weapon was used.
Snr Sgt Morrissey said the 28-year-old woman later died as a result of her injuries, and the Major Crime Squad was investigating.
“Investigations are in their early stages as detectives work to understand the circumstances of the assault. A 31-year-old woman is in custody and is assisting police with enquiries,” he said.
Police first notified the public with a Facebook post about 10.30pm Tuesday but have not said what time they took the 31-year-old into custody.
